  Anand poised to break fresh ground
The Linares victory has taken Viswanathan Anand very close to a new milestone in his career: The Indian might soon become only the second player in the history -- after Garry Kasparov -- to break into the exclusive 2,800 Elo club.
  Sampras back on number one spot
Despite his worst loss in almost a decade last week to go out early of the $2.45-million Monte Carlo Open, Pete Sampras yesterday found himself back to number one in the world. The American who crashed out 6-1, 6-1 in the second round of the clay court Mercedes Super 9 event to Frenchman Fabrice Santoro took back the top spot from Chile's Marcelo Rios.

Feroz favourite for Cyanamid
The 1997-98 season of the Professional Golfers Association's (PGAI) Indian Tour will come to an exciting finish at the historic Royal Calcutta Golf Club with the staging of the Cyanamid Open Golf, in a new format. The tournament which begins tomorrow will be a unique one because it follows the format of the AT&T Invitational at Pebble Beach, which is part of the US PGA Tour.
Pillay, Saini will be fit, hopes Dr Cruz
The focus at the hockey World Cup preparatory camp kept shifting to the sidelines, where two captains sat, watching the action. Dhanraj Pillay, who led the team for the Pakistan series, and Baljit Singh Saini, captain for the recently concluded four-nation tournament in Australia, were the centre of attraction. They are yet to recover from their injuries but have joined the camp and are expected to be fit for the World Cup beginning on May 15.

Ramakant Desai cremated
Former Indian speedster Ramakant Desai, who died in Mumbai on Monday, was cremated at the Shivaji Park electric crematorium this morning. A host of past Test cricketers were present to pay tributes to one of the leading fast bowlers the country had produced.
Faldo confident of good show
The Omega Tour's inaugural Macau Open begins at Macau on Thursday. Among the heavyweights participating in the tournament are Nick Faldo and five-time US PGA winner Vijay Singh of Fiji. Gaurav Ghei, Vivek Bhandari and other Indians are also participating in the tournament.
