2,700 migrate from Udhampur

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
JAMMU, April 29: About 2700 people have migrated from Mahore and its adjoining areas in Udhampur district following the recent Prankote massacre of 26 villagers, chairman of All India Congress Committee Seva Dal and MP Suresh Pachauri said today. ``Migration is going on unabated in the affected areas and can snowball into a colossal problem if urgent measures are not taken to check it,'' he said. Pachauri, who visited Reasi and Pouni where the migrants have been put up, said migration could only be stopped if the authorities instilled confidence in the terror-stricken people.

Condemning the state government for its failure to protect innocent members of the minority community, he alleged that ``callous neglect and indifference has been displayed by the administration in handling the situation after the carnage.'' The administration had not made proper arrangements for accommodation, food and medical care for the victims.

During her recent visit to the Reasi and Pouni camps, Congress president SoniaGandhi had announced a comprehensive relief package, including Rs 10 lakh, for the massacre victims and those displaced from their villages, Pachauri said. She directed the Congress in Jammu and Kashmir to immediately galvanise resources and rush aid to the area, he said.
