Joseph D'Mello held to draw

MUMBAI, April 29: Top-seeded Swapnil Shah (3 points) of Maharashtra won the third match on the trot when he crushed Ashwin Makwana (2) of Gujarat in 13 moves in the third round of All-India Open Chess Championships for the blind, sponsored by Employees of i2 Technology, at the Andheri Sports Complex here today.

Joseph D'Mello (2.5), the seventh seed from Maharashtra was surprising held to a draw by Dinesh Bhura (2.5) of Gujarat.

After three rounds, 19 players share the lead with 3 points each.

Samuel Manohar (2) of Karnataka suffered his first loss when he went down fighting to eighth seed Rajesh Rajput (3) of Gujarat in 45 moves of King Pawn game. Veteran Dwarkadas Patel (3) of Gujarat notched his third victory by defeating Neha Pawaskar of Maharashtra.

RESULTS

Third round: Swapnil Shah (3, Mah) bt Ashwin Makwana (2, Guj), Madan Bagaitkar (3, Mah) bt R Sarvanath (2, TN), S Seethavansa (2, Kerala) lost to Vilesh Bhat (3, TN), Charu Jadhav (3, Mah) bt S Pandiyarajan (2, TN), S Raut (3, Mah) btRajnikant Tripathi (2, Har), Ms Sarita Karde (2, Mah) lost to Devidas Kamble (3, Mah) and Ms Shephali Mahato (1, WB) bt Dharmaraj Vardhe (0, Mah).
