BoI cruise to 8-wkt win

MUMBAI, April 29: Bank of India regained the Inter-Bank Western Region title after a gap of one year when they defeated State Bank of Saurashtra by eight wickets at the Wankhede Stadium here today.

State Bank of Saurashtra, after being put in to bat, were bowled out for 141. But they were 30 for seven at one stage with medium-pacer Subhash Ranjane, who later on won the man of the match and best bowler award, wrecking havoc from one end.

State Bank's recovery was staged by the remaining three wickets with one-drop batsman Mahesh Mehta and Virbhadra Gohil leading with a 45-run partnership for the eighth wicket. Ranjane finished with 5 for 14 in eight overs.

Bank of India also started badly, losing opener Pravin Hingnikar early. But two good partnerships -- 66 for the second wicket and 59 for the third wicket helped them win comfortably.

Yogesh Ghare and Mangesh were involved for the second wicket. Ghare then found able assistance from Srikant Pednekar.

K Diwakar of State Bank of Saurashtra wasdeclared the best batsmen while Bank of Maharashtra's Santosh Jagtap was awarded the player of tournament.

State Bank of Saurashtra 141 in 43.4 overs (Mahesh Mehta 68 n.o. Virbhadra Gohil 23; Subhash Ranjane 5-14, Jayesh Dadarkar 2-22) lost to Bank of India 142-2 in 35.5 overs (Yogesh Ghare 70 n.o., Srikant Pednekar 27 n.o.).

Tatas, MSP in final

Tatas pipped Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilizers 2-1 via the sudden-death in the semi-finals of the Guru Nanak Devji hockey tournament at the Khalsa College ground, Matunga, today. The two were locked goalless at the end of the regulation time and were level 1-1 after the tie-breaker.

It was a rough match and Weldon Miranda of Tatas was shown the red card. Enrico scored both the goals for Tatas, while only Vinod Kumar was successful for RCF. In the other semi-final, Maharashtre State Police drubbed Khalsa Gymkhana 4-0. Prakash Sakpal (2), Ajamat Shaikh and Ankalesh Yesur were the goal-getters.

A-I, BPT in semis

Localoutfits Air-India and Bombay Port Trust (BPT) recorded easy wins to storm into the men's semi-finals of the Shivai Nagar Kala-Krida Mandal All India Invitation Kabaddi Tournament on the penultimate day here today.

In the quarter-finals, A-I defeated another local outfit Bank of Maharashtra 20-13, after leading 11-6 in the breather, while BPT crushed Armed Forces Sports Club, Delhi 33-15, after sitting pretty at 14-8 at half time.

For A-I, catcher Vijay Ghadligaokar and raider Sanjay Suryavanshi, played well while raider James and catcher Jayawantha Bodke impressed for the bankmen.

RESULTS

Men (quarter-finals): Air-India bt Bank of Maharashtra, Mumbai 20-13.Bombay Port Trust, Mumbai bt Armed Forces Sports Club, Delhi 33-15.

Women's (quarter-finals): Ranapratap Sangha, Pune bt Savithri Bhai Pule Kreeda Mandal, Mumbai 27-14. Chembur Kreeda Kendra, Mumbai bt Pune Amateurs 23-7.

Bihar, WB in summit clash

Bihar and West Bengal will contest in the final of the 9th National FootballChampionships for the deaf at the Cooperage on Thursday. In the semi-finals, Bihar trounced Delhi 3-0 with. Ranjit Singh opened the scoring while PK Samad netted the remaining two in the second half.

In the second semi-final, West Bengal defeated Kerala in the tie-breaker after a goalless full-time.

CGSC advance

Central Government Staff Colony (CGSC), Antop Hill, defeated holders Santana 3-1 in the pre-quarter-finals of the late Joseph Koli floodlit rink football tournament at the Ganesh Maidan, Sewri, today. Alex D'Souza (2) and Mackey Barretto scored for the winners, while Savio Rodrigues reduced the margin.A goal by Biju Ponachan turned out to be the match-winner for Kalina United against Shahi Shipping.

In an other tie, Sacred Heart (Santa Cruz) defeated Glorians 2-0. Eustace Pereira and Ronny Mendonca were the goal scorers.

IPCL play truant

IPCL (Nagothane) failed to turn up for their Bombay Hockey Association-conducted first-round tie of the Bhivandiwalla tournament against FrAgnel Balbhavan (Vashi), today.

Fr Agnel will now meet Bombay Republicans C in the second round.

Double for Khar Gym

Khar Gymkhana have bagged both the Tata Shield and the Prof JD Belani Shield Inter-Club Tennis tournament beating CCI 5-4 and 4-0 in both the finals. The Khar team comprised of Prof Shyam Belani (capt), Asif Ismail, Sridhar Bhabhalia, Ravi Bhaya, Rajesh Belani, Rajesh Jagwani, Neeraj Desai, Imran Yousuf, Kunal Premnarayan, Shravan Satyani, Chacko Koshy and Rajesh Bachani.
