Sex, guidelines & videotape

Sumedha Raikar-Mhatre
MUMBAI, April 29: Following a prolonged meeting today with eight producers of the now-suspended sex comedy plays, the Maharashtra government's Stage Performances Scrutiny Board today decided to re-check every word of these scripts before giving them a green signal. Board president Shantaram Nandgaonkar today said the producers have been told to bring all scripts to the board's office as soon as possible.

The board's members will discuss the scripts and titles threadbare. Then the changed scripts will be performed on stage by the producers. The performances will be videotaped. The producers will then give an undertaking to the board that they will not change a word/gesture from the approved version, Nandgaonkar said. Meanwhile, the plays will not be staged, he added. The eight sex comedy plays which were suspended a fortnight ago include Saali Poori Gharwali, Parayee Nari Lage Pyari, Pati Anari Devar Khiladi, and the Marathi play Bayko Peksha Mehuni Bari.

At a meeting held with the producersof the ``sexy plays,'' which included Yogendra Konkar (Saali... and Parayee Nari Lage Pyari), Satish Pednekar (Pati Anadi, Devar Khiladi), Anis Javed (Band Kamare Mein) and Janardan Lavangare (Bayako Peksha...), board president Nandgaonkar spelt out the future plans. ``I told them the board is not against their plays. In fact, we want theatre to flourish. But we certainly want to remove the objectionable and overt references to sex. Vulgarity cannot be allowed at any cost,'' Nandgaonkar said. He said the plays will remain suspended for a while. The board is also thinking of a permanent vigilance group to conduct surprise checks. ``There's a need for a long-term solution. Unless we have surprise checks, this won't stop,'' he said.
