2 Ford Escorts, 16 A/C cars for MIC

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, April 29: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation today placed orders for two Ford Escort cars and 16 air-conditioned cars in keeping with ``the dignity and prestige'' of the Mayor-in-Council system. While Ford Escort cars will be used by Mayor Nandu Satam and Municipal Commissioner Girish Gokhale, other cars will be at the disposal of the council members. There is also a proposal under consideration to provide residential accommodation to all the council members.

A lot of shifting and shunting will have to be done at the the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation headquarters too to accommodate the chairmen of the various committees and their staff. The top bosses are now identifying the offices that could be moved out of the headquarters and to the other BMC offices. A senior officer said at least seven to eight departments could be moved to other locations without hampering their functioning. A few offices are likely to be shifted to the Worli ward office which has some extra space.

At a meetingtoday attended by the mayor, the commissioner and the additional municipal commissioners, it was decided to form a new unit to look into the requirements of the 12 committees of the council. According to sources, the new unit will look into their requirements of staff, furniture, office stationary etc. However, the formation of this unit will have to be approved by the members of the council. As the council is likely to be formed in the next 10 days, the unit will take shape only after that. Also discussed at the meeting was the possibility of allowing deputy municipal commissioners to attend committee meetings. Till date there were fewer committees and the additional municipal commissioners could attend all their meetings. However, now that there will be 12 committees and each committee will be required to hold at least one meeting in a month, the deputy municipal commissioners too will be required to attend their meetings.

The administration is also in the process of formulating the rules and regulationsfor these meetings. The next general body meeting, which was scheduled for May 4, has been postponed to May 9, to give enough time for the nominations to the 12 committees.`
