Pile of files await MIC

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, April 29: While the new Mayor-in-Council slowly takes shape the workload continues to pile up at the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). After various civic committees were dissolved pending proposals are awaiting the setting up of the 12 departmental standing committees which is likely to take two more weeks.

Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray is yet to announce the names of the Sena members for the council, which has led to the delay in forming the new committees. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which will have four members in the council, also has not finalised its list as well as its nominee for the the deputy mayor, a post allotted to it by the Sena. As of now, the commissioner has the power to sanction proposals up to Rs 10 lakh and any proposal beyond this estimated cost will have to wait till the council holds its meeting.

Though Nandu Satam has been elected the mayor, he does not have the power to take any decision without his council members. Majority of the pending proposals arefinancial in nature which were sanctioned by the now defunct standing committee. This high-powered panel met every week regularly.

Since other committees held their meetings once every month their proposals are not likely to be affected. Formation of the departmental committees are held up also because the leaders of various opposition parties are not clear about how to nominate their members to various committees and how many.

Congress leader Kishan Jadhav felt that the best way would be for each party to announce its list for various committees, adding that election of members to the panels would take more than two months.

Meanwhile, leader of the Samajwadi Party (SP) Yusuf Abrahani complained that the panels will take decisions on proposal worth only up to Rs two crore. "The controversial proposals always run into crores of rupees," he lamented.
