Couple swept away in Yamuna while immersing relative's ashes

NEW DELHI, April 29: In a freak accident, a couple were swept away in the Yamuna today evening while they were immersing the ashes of the husband's mother who had died recently. While the wife is battling for her life in Ram Manohar Lal Hospital, there is no trace of the husband.

Rajinder Kumar, 30, and his wife Protima Kumar, 25, had reached the pontoon bridge area near Yamuna, accompanied by other relatives, to perform the final rites of his mother around 6 p.m.

According to the police, they had entered the river to immerse the ashes when they slipped and fell into the water. The accompanying family members tried to locate them but with the night gathering fast their efforts proved to be in vain.

Finally, with the help of local divers and firemen, Protima Kumar was rescued from the dark waters of Yamuna. They could not recover the body of Rajinder Kumar. They both were residents of Jawahar Colony in Faridabad.
