NEW DELHI, April 29: Fifty-seven police officers were presented high ranks, or out-of-turn promotions, by the Commissioner T R Kakkar today. There were six inspectors, six sub-inspectors, 19 assistant sub-inspectors and 26 head constables in the group. They had distinguished themselves in the field.The ceremony held at New Police Lines in North Delhi was attended by a large number of police officers.
Twenty-nine officers who had displayed a high sense of responsibility in apprehending dreaded criminals belonging to the Abdul Karam gang on February 27 this year were included in the list.
This gang was responsible for various bomb blasts in Delhi and adjoining states like Haryana, UP and Punjab.
Twenty-one people had been killed and 403 people were injured in the series of blasts caused by this gang.
ASI Nirbhay Singh and constable Balraj Singh who had rescued 10-year-old Suvashish Chatterjee of Sarita Vihar from his kidnappers within 12 hours of his kidnapping were also honoured.
Also included in the list was an assistant sub-inspector who apprehended a criminal responsible for more than a 100 heinous crimes and who was carrying a reward of Rs 1 lakh from the UP police. Many other officers who were awarded had succeeded in apprehending criminals though they had suffered serious injury themselves. One of the head constables had been repeatedly stabbed but still did not loosen his grip over a criminal he had caught.
