  SC raps Nayanar Govt in ISRO case, acquits all
The Supreme Court has severely indicted Kerala's E K Nayanar Government for ordering "further investigation" by the state police into the 1994 ISRO spy case even after the CBI had found that no case had been made out against the accused. The Kerala Government had, by its order on June 27, 1996, withdrawn the consent it had earlier given to the CBI and had asked the state police to probe the case.
  Petitioners in ISRO spy case to file suits for compensation
With the Supreme Court soundly rejecting the Kerala Government's bid to re-open the ISRO "spy" case, the stage is set for the six petitioners to file suits for damages for the mental and physical agony they say they have endured since the "scandal" surfaced in October 1994.

UN may drop "peace zone" proposal for Indian Ocean
The United Nations is on the verge of "abandoning" a long standing proposal for declaring the Indian Ocean as a "zone of peace," because of vehement opposition from the United States, UK and France. The committee was set up in 1972 to implement a General Assembly resolution calling for the establishment of a zone of peace in the Indian Ocean.
Afghans agree on Ulema panel
The on-going talks between the Taliban and the Northern Alliance forces have yielded results as both the sides reached an agreement over the setting up of an Ulema Commission for establishing peace and also setting up a broad based government in Afghanistan. The two sides arrived to a decision on their sixth session.

Taiwan for Tibet: The Chinese barter
China may reportedly be willing to resume talks with the exiled Tibetan religious leader Dalai Lama if Washington was prepared to "act" on Taiwan. China has reportedly set up a special preparatory committee headed by Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan for coordinating the Taiwan issue during US president Bill Clinton's visit in June.
Goa shipyard launches Darshak
A hydrographic survey vessel "Darshak", the largest vessel built by Goa Shipyard for the Indian Navy, was launched at Vasco da Gama on Tuesday. Darshak will be equipped with state-of-the-art survey equipment which will help chart the seabed in the entire Indian peninsula.
