  Vajpayee dedicates Konkan Rly to the nation
Dedicating the Konkan Railway Project to the nation at a function in Ratnagiri yesterday, Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee stressed on the need to pay more attention to infrastructure development. The Prime Minister also called for the setting up of a memorial for the 74 workers who died during the project's construction.
  India to confront US on Pak tests
Pakistan's egregious ballistic missile program is to figure among the list of New Delhi concerns in talks between Indian Foreign Secretary K Raghunath and US Undersecretary of State Thomas Pickering which began in Washington yesterday. The talks began at 10.30 am and were scheduled to last till 12.30 pm.

Vajpayee's first diplomatic move is hawkish; skips Cairo meeting
Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee will not be going to Egypt for the G-15 (Group-15) meeting of heads of government and states from three continents, being held from May 11-13, ostensibly because of domestic preoccupations. Instead, vice-president Krishan Kant will lead the Indian delegation to Cairo.
18 long-range Chinese missiles aimed at US
Notwithstanding the ostrich-like stance of the United States where China's nuclear program is concerned, a new CIA report says China has aimed 13 of its 18 long-range strategic missiles at American cities. The document completely rubbishes President Clinton's claim that with the end of the Cold War there is not a single nuclear missile aimed at the US.

Dam trapped in a tragedy of errors
One of the largest hydro-electric projects of the country is stuck for the last four years because Government agencies made crucial errors while calculating the height of the dam. The mistakes have brought the 1500 MW Nathpa Jhakri Power Project near Shimla near closure.
US Senate okays NATO expansion
The US Senate on Thursday ratified a NATO expansion treaty that ushers in Hungary, Poland and the Czech Republic as new members of the western alliance. The Senate vote was 80 to 19 in favor of expansion.
