  Sampras advances to quarters
Top-seed Pete Sampras and second seed Jason Stoltenberg of Australia advanced to the quarter-finals of the AT&T Challenge with second-round wins on muddy clay courts at the Atlanta Athletic Club on Thursday. Sampras, who regained his world number one ranking this week, needed the full three sets to hold off Davide Sanguinetti of Italy 6-3 5-7 7-5.
  Bergkamp wins prestigious award
Arsenal's Dutch striker Dennis Bergkamp was named England's Footballer-of-the-year yesterday -- the fourth successive overseas player to win the most prestigious award in the English game. His teammate Tony Adams finished second in the poll with Liverpool's talented young player Michael Owen third.

Four Indians make the cut
Arjun Singh and Arjun Atwal lead the four Indians who made the cut in the Omega Tour's $ 200,000 Macau Open. Vivek Bhandari and Amritinder Singh are the other two who made the cut which was applied at eight over 150.

Ali Sher shines but Basad stays ahead
Delhi's Ali Sher played the best round of golf in the Cyanamid Open tournament at the Royal Calcutta Golf Club yesterday, even as local boy Basad Ali continued to lead after 54 holes. Ali Sher, twice Classic Indian Open champion, had a round of three under 69 under difficult conditions and now shares the second spot with three others.
West Bengal girls enter semi-finals
West Bengal defeated Andhra Pradesh in a rain interrupted women's match of the 20th Federation Cup Volley Championships at Chalakudy in Kerala yesterday. West Bengal won 15-13, 15-10, 15-5 to enter the semifinals. They will now meet defending champions Indian Railways in the semi-finals today.
