PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
New Delhi, May 3: India's defence scientists have been given the green signal to work on the second phase of the Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile Agni, Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO) sources said.Stating that the government has approved the next phase of the programme, the sources said ``we are going to increase the range of the Agni missiles.

''The present range of Agni is 1,500 kilomteres which is the same as that claimed for Pakistan's Ghauri missile that was test fired last month. The Defence Research Development Organisation scientists said the next version of Agni would have a much higher range but declined to divulge more details.

Asked if further launches of Agni missile were planned the sources said the desired performance capabilities of Agni had already been established during the three test flights conducted so far. ``We do not need to test the technologies anymore.'' According to the sources what is now planned is to modify the design to increase its range. Once thismodification is done it has to be test flown to verify if the design is sound.
