NEW DELHI, May 3: A software engineer was allegedly beaten up by some United Airways personnel at the Indira Gandhi International Airport on Friday night. The engineer, D K Parsai, was on his way to Seattle and was about to board a British Airways flight -- for which United Airways handles the ground operations -- when the incident occurred. In his complaint to the airport police, Parsai said that he was stopped by the United Airways personnel for a security check despite having had his baggage cleared by the airport authorities earlier.
Parsai, nevertheless, agreed to have his baggage scanned under a X-Ray machine once again. When the computer screen displayed the image of a dark object inside one of his suitcases, a United Airways staffer Namita Subramanium asked him to open the suitcase.
The software engineer pointed out that the dark object was a small bag, containing toiletries and other articles which had already been checked earlier.
Parsai told the police that Subramanium refused to believehim, and instead accused him of being a smuggler. As he protested, a heated argument ensued between both sides. Tempers cooled when Parsai agreed to have his baggage re-examined.
The examination revealed nothing suspicious, but another argument ensued after Parsai asked Subramanium to help him repack the luggage and she refused to do so.
The situation took a turn for the worse when Subramanium summoned six of he sub-ordinates who allegedly roughed up Parsai.
Other passengers came to his rescue and took him to the police station. Parsai's relatives, who had come to see him off, also accompanied him.
The six United Airways employees were later questioned by the police, while Parsai left for Seattle after filing his complaint. A senior police official said that investigations were on, further action would be taken on the basis of the medical reports.
