Khalsa, Rebels in semis

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, May 3: Khalsa XI completed a now regulation thumping win in the quarter-finals of the S D Bhivandiwala hockey tournament at the Mahindra Stadium today.

The Khalsa youngsters scored four, including two quick ones towards the end of the first half, against a hapless Central Railway Workshop, Matunga. Lawrence Noronha carried Khalsa through to the semi-final to be played against Rebel Sports Club on Tuesday by scoring one and brilliantly setting up two. Nitin Bhosle struck twice and coach-playmaker Hardeep Singh Saini added one to the Khalsa tally.

The Rebels, meanwhile, looked set to make a smooth entry into the semis with a dominant first half which they led 1-0. However, a penalty stroke in the 45th minute put Vasai Eskimos back on track after dominating the entire second half. The resultant shoot-out went in Rebels' favour.

Condrad Fernandes, playing right-out throughout the match, donned the pads for the tie-breaker and emerged hero with two opportunistic saves. A dive to the left and a shottake on his chest made way for his team's semi-final entry. And taking no chances, he scored his team's fourth goal in the tie-breaker as well.

Khalsa dominate: After Lawrence successfully converted a penalty corner in the 18th minute, things became quieter till two minutes from the break. First, Bhosle shot home after Allan Fernandes' centre clearance had beaten everyone and seconds later, Lawrence won a battle with the competent CR custodian Chetan Remedios and managed to relay to Saini who scored.

In the 40th minute, Lawrence's well directed free hit found Bhosle for the final nail in the CRW coffin.

Indian Airlines play Bombay Republicans C in the other semi-final on Tuesday.
