CHANDIGARH, May 3: The UT Administration is considering a proposal which may allow more land to be available for allotment to private educational institutions in the City. Officials point out that the number of educational institutions in residential areas has been multiplying over the years. They add that while a policy is being worked out to allow nursing homes and STD-Fax booths to operate from residential areas, there is a bleak possibility of schools being allowed to function from houses. An officer said that the only kinds of "schools" which may be considered for permission to operate from residential premises, are creches and kindergartens. As for the higher classes, the Director Public Instruction (Schools) has been called for information on the exact number of schools quartered in residential premises - especially those which are recognised.
The DPI has also been asked to find out how much covered area is occupied by these schools, the number of children, the size of the plot and so on. The Administration presently has about 30 sites for schools in the City - including both government and private schools. However, there are a large number of recognised schools in residential areas which are presently awaiting allotment of land. Officials assert that as it is not possible to allot land to all these schools, it is being worked out how many educational institutions can be accommodated in the given number of sites. One of the options being considered is that some of the existing government schools have very large campuses. Hence, the other government schools slated to come up can be accommodated on a part of the vast campus of these schools.
It is being proposed that it may be possible to accommodate a primary school on the campus of a large school. In this way, the plot intended for the government primary school can be allotted to a private school.
