CHANDIGARH, May 3: A cycle rally was organised by Energy Research Centre, Panjab University, here today to celebrate International Sun Day.Nearly 300 students from various educational institutions participated in the rally. A demonstration van of PEDA displaying different solar energy gadgets also accompanied the rally.Flagging off the rally, N.S. Tiwana, executive director, Punjab State Council for Science and Technology, stressed upon the need for large-scale use of non-conventional sources of energy to reduce the impact of energy crisis facing the country. S.S. Bedi, Principal Scientific Officer, Ministry of Non-Conventional Energy Sources highlighted the role of the ministry in promoting non-conventional energy sources.
Prof S.K. Sharma, Director, Energy Research Centre, said state of art facilities would be provided to students at the centre, in case they wish to carry development studies in the area of solar studies.
The best contingent award was bagged by Shivalik Public School, Sector 41. Government Model High School, Sector 38 and Government Model Senior School, Sector 19 won the second and third prizes, respectively, at the competition.Government Model High School, Sector 41 won the certificate of merit.
Ramneet Kaur and Jasdeep Singh of Shivalik Public, Sector 41 won the first and second prize, respectively, for the best slogans for solar energy.
