V-C has received letter -- CUPA

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
SURAT, May 3: The South Gujarat College and University Teachers' Association have expressed surprise over Vice-Chancellor Ashwin Kapadia's claim that the university had not received any letter from the association seeking an increase in the remuneration for assessment work during annual examinations.

Association treasurer K K Desai said that the association had written a letter to the university, seeking a two-fold increase in the remuneration, and that it was handed over to Kapadia's personal assistant Bhavsar. The association also claims to have a proof of the delivery. If the personal assistant did not hand over the letter to the vice-chancellor, it was shameful, the association remarked.

Desai also claimed to have called up the vice-chancellor personally to apprise him of the teachers' demands. If the vice-chancellor claimed that there had been no representation on the issue, then his statement was far from the truth, opined Desai.

Reacting in response to Kapadia's statement that since the teachers were in for a hefty salary-hike they should not crib for more remuneration, the association said that the teachers' payscale and assessment remuneration were not linked and that the the teachers were carrying out assessment work of internal examinations as part of their duty and were not asking for any money for it.

All over the country, university and college teachers were paid remuneration in addition to their salary, the association maintained, adding that it was aware of the weak financial position of the university and was hence not pressing for dues pending for the last three years. But when the university had hiked students' fees and the rates of remuneration had been increased by other universities too, SGU teachers were justified in demanding the same, the association remarked.
