Patch-up bid between textile mill owners, excise department officials fails

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
Surat, May 4: The tussle between officials of the Central Excise Department and textile mill owners is far from over despite Chief Excise Commissioner Gopinath Sarangi's best efforts to bring about a rapprochement between the two sides.

Both parties have been trading charges, with mill owners complaining that excise officials harass and torture them during raids, and the excise department accusing mill owners of evading taxes to the tune of crores. Last week, Sarangi brought the two sides together for an across-the-table discussion in a bid to end the atmosphere of mutual distrust -- at least three mill owners have lodged police complaints against excise officials for beating up their staff during raids.
