Ants have an elephantine memory
LONDON: Ants take photographs of permanent features in their surroundings to help them find their way around outside the nest. Of particular importance are obvious landmarks such as stones or trees. This conclusion has been reached by biologists Simon Judd and Tom Collett of the University of Sussex in Southern England, who describe their findings in the latest issue of the London scientific journal Nature. During experiments with formica rufa, the great red wood ant, the biologists observed that ants leaving a newly-discovered source of food returned to their nest in a very awkward way, constantly turning round to take stock of the scenery.Saddam's plan
LIMOGES: When Saddam Hussein decided to build the world's biggest mosque, he turned to France and its modern masters of mighty minarets. France built the world's largest existing mosque in Morocco, and Paris boasts Pharaonic projects like the grand arch at La Defence and the renovated Louvre with itsglass pyramid. So Saddam has turned to French architects for his dream of a massive place of worship that will literally contain the Iraqi strongman's thumbprint. The man who has caught Baghdad's eye is architect Francois Barriere, a lifelong Egypt-lover who lives and works in the central French town of Limoges, famous for its porcelain. Barriere wants to build a 155-meter obelisk, complete with offices and a revolving restaurant, in Paris marking 200 years since France acquired the ancient one now in the place De La Concorde.
