U Thant peace award for resident of city
Dada J P Vaswani of the Vadodara-based Sadhu Vaswani Mission was given the U Thant Peace Award at a function in New York recently for his spiritual activities. The award has been named after the late secretary-general of the United Nations. The award, which included a citation, was presented by Chinmoy of the Peace Meditation at the UN, according to a press release by the Mission. Former Soviet Union premier Mikhail Gorbachev, South African leader Nelson Mandela and Mother Teresa are its former recipients.

Vehicle numbers
The Regional Transport Office (RTO) has launched a new series of vehicle registration numbers, according to an official release issued here on Monday. The release said that since the GJ-6-HH series was exhausted, the new series GJ-6-KK-1 to 9999 had been launched. Those interested in getting numbers of their choice contact the RTO after May 15 .

Animal workshop
The Vadodara Centre For Animal Rescue and Emergency (VCARE) has organised a two-week workshop on animal welfare beginning May 11. The workshop for children between four and 13 will be held at Hotel Welcomgroup. Those interested should contact on 354825 from 10 am to 5.30 pm.

Child guidance
The child guidance and counselling centre of the Bhailal Amin Anand Bal Marg Darshan Kendra will remain open from 9 am to noon till June 13, according to a Kendra release here on Monday.

NHRC lecture
A lecture on, `Human Rights as Limitations on State Power,' will be organised at the Home Science Auditorium of the M S University on Friday. The lecture will be delivered by the Chairperson of National Human Rights Commission, M N Venkatachaliah at 4 p.m.

Appointed
A meeting of the Bharatiya Telephone Employees' Union Class III, which was held recently in presence of Vadodara Telecom General Manager Rakesh Babu and chaired by veteran journalist Kirit Bhatt, unanimously appointed I F Desai as the union president with V S Kulkarni and K R Parmar as vice-presidents.

Jivan Yatra
The `Jivan Raksha Yatra', which was flagged off on Friday, travelled through several villages of Dabhoi and Shinor talukas. Additional District Health Officer Sabnis, health officers of the Chandod and Shinor Primary health centres presided over functions held in these villages.

Reiki seminar
A second degree reiki seminar will be held on Saturday and Sunday. Those interested should contact Harshada Chhaya at 173, Shrenik Park, or on 332369, 320473.

`Remove office'
Youth Congress members and former MSU union leader Narendra Rawat has demanded removal of the SOCLEEN office from the university. They stated that the university premise should be used only for educational purposes.
