VADODARA, May 4: Nearly 80,000 people residing in societies near the Harni airport are likely to benefit from an underground sump to be constructed by the VMC.The decision on the awarding of a Rs 2.57 crore contract for the sump, a pump house, compound walls and feeder lines is expected to be taken at the Standing Committee meeting on Thursday.
The work is part of the Rs 5.91 crore project recommended by the Tata Consultancy Services. The HUDCO has already sanctioned a Rs 4.12 crore loan for the purpose.
Ice destroyed: The VMC on Monday destroyed nearly 200 kg of ice from various shops and food joints near Jubilee Garden, Pratap Talkies and the Baroda Music College as a precaution against epidemic, an official spokesman said.
Shopkeepers and residents have been requested not to keep ice and other foodstuff in the open.
The demolition squad also removed 45 unauthorised patharas from the area.VMC rapped: Former Standing Committee chairman and social worker Fatehsinh Rana has criticised the VMC for its failure to widen the road between Motibaug and Jayratna building.
In a statement here on Monday, he said that on April 26, 1990, the Committee had resolved to widen the road. Because of the narrowness of the road, two children and their grandfather had lost their lives a few years ago, he said, demanding that the work be taken up on priority.
