St Soldier School score victory

Chandigarh, May 4: St Soldier International School, Sector 28 thrashed Moti Ram Arya Senior Secondary School, Sector 28, 18-6 in the girls section in the opening match of the Chandigarh state sub-junior basketball championship which began at DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8 here today.

Indu with 14 points top scored for the eventual winners, who had a 6 points lead at the break (8-2). Rekha also contributed 2 points to the score.

Gurpreet (4) and Nitu (2) scored for Moti Ram School.

Seven teams in the girls section and 8 in the boys are participating in the meet. During the tournament, Chandigarh team will be selected to take part in the 25th Sub-junior national basketball championship to be held at Pondicherry from May 14 to 18.

Roller Hawks win

Roller Hawks won the first position in the sub-junior boys category in the roller hockey event in the Rajiv Sandhu Gold Cup roller skating tournament which concluded yesterday at Bhavan Vidyalaya, Sector 27. Chandigarh team and Manav Mangal Club got the second and third places respectively.

In the junior boys, Tiger Club, Patiala was first while Manav Mangal Club and Roller Hawks were placed second and third.

Roller Hawks also won the title in the girls section. Manav Mangal Club took the second place.

In the senior boys, Super Striker Club, Jammu got the gold medal medal. Silver went to Chandigarh team.

Results of the other events held: Rink Race III: Girls: 6 to 9 yrs: 1 Krishma, 2 Renuka, 3 Isha. 9 to 12 yrs: 1 Gitika, Nupur, 3 Gaganjit. 12 to 14 yrs: Priyanka, 2 Meenu, 3 Ritika. 14 to 16 yrs: Indu, 2 Minakshi, 3 Heena.Boys: Below 6 yrs: 1 Romit, 2 Vipul Kamboj, 3 Jatin. 6 to 9 yrs: 1 Gursagar, 2 Karan Arora, 3 Amit Arora. 12 to 14 yrs: 1 Daksh Gaddi, 2 Amit, 3 Gautam.

Wrestling meet

The Chandigarh state wrestling championships in sub-junior and junior categories for men in freestyle and Greco-Roman and in freestyle in women section will be held on May 7 and 8, at Sector 30 Wrestling Coaching Centre.

According to a press release, wrestler will only be allowed to participate through the affiliated units, with proper date of birth certificate.

Death condoled

`Flying Sikh' Milkha Singh expressed profound grief over the death of two-time Asian Games shot put champion Joginder Singh who died of brain hemorrhage in New Delhi yesterday. Milkha Singh describing Joginder Singh as a `lion-hearted' thrower. Milkha Singh and Joginder were members of the 1962 Asian Games in Jakarta where the former won gold in 400 metres.

``His death has created a void which will be difficult to fill. I have lost a friend and a fine athlete,'' said Milkha Singh in a chocked voice.
