Calcutta, May 5: In a major jailbreak case, three dacoits escaped from the high security Alipore Jail in the early hours of Monday morning. According to the Calcutta Police officials, they twisted the iron bars of their cell and later scaled the jail boundary walls and escaped. The jail break, which was discovered in the early hours, however, left the jail staff and security personnel on night patrol, baffled. The Calcutta Police and West Bengal Police launched an intensive manhunt to rearrest the dacoits - Amir Ali Mandal, Momin Mandal and Shar Ali Mandal. They were lodged in the jail since 1996 and were undergoing trial for alleged involvement in a dacoity case in Moochipara Thana Police Station area.
Till evening, the police could not find any clue to the dacoits escape. According to Additional Commissioner of Police (1) S Chakraborty, ``The investigation is on and we hope to net them soon,'' Chakraborty said adding that ``we have also began a probe into the lapses which led to theirescape.''
According to jail sources, the three, who were kept in ward No 5 took advantage of ``shortage of duty staff'' and executed their plans successfully.
