Congress is not an alternative to BJP: Surjeet

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
NEW DELHI, May 5: CPM leader Harkishan Singh Surjeet today criticised Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav's reported statement that he was willing to join hands with the Congress, and said the Congress was not an alternative to the BJP.

Reacting to Yadav's statement, Surjeet told a private television network that "we do not agree that Congress is an alternative to BJP... Why was the United Front formed?"

Maintaining that his party had differences with the Congress, the CPM leader said if Yadav supported the Congress, it would only strengthen the latter. "What Yadav has said is not proper," he asserted.

He said the UF was formed only to provide a third front. "But when it comes to keeping the BJP away from power, I think there is difference between Congress and BJP," he added.
