Paes drops to 106

NEW DELHI: Leander Paes has fallen three places on the world singles map to be placed at 106, according to the ATP Ranking list released on Monday. His doubles partner, Mahesh Bhupathi, however, inched his way up by two places from last week to find himself at 289.

In doubles team ranking, the pair maintained their No.3 slot, with Bhupathi being placed a step ahead of Paes in individual rankings at No.6. Aussie stars Todd Woodbridge and Mark Woodforde lead the doubles list followed by Dutch pair, Jacco Eltingh and Paul Haarhuis.

Australia best

MUMBAI: The Australian team, with 94 points to its credit, has won the second Ceat International Cricket Team of the Year award for the year 1997-98. Australia picked up 60 test points and 34 one day points.

South Africa, probably the best one-day side in the world, finished second with 74 points just ahead of Pakistan (72 points). Sri Lanka, with 64 points, and India with 58 points finished fourth and fifth respectively.Thefinal standing: 1. Australia (94 pts), 2. South Africa (74), 3. Pakistan (72), 4. Sri Lanka (64), 5. India (58), 6. New Zealand (45), 7. West Indies (44), 8. England (43), 9. Zimbabwe (20), 10. Kenya (4).

Feroz second

NEW DELHI: Indian Open champion Feroz Ali maintains his second position in the 1998 Omega Tour Order of Merit, according to the latest rankings released after the Macau Open.

Ali, who did not play the Macau tournament, has earned $51,695.91, which is about $36,000 less than England's Ed Fryatt who leads the table with a total earnings of $87,097.50.

Other Indians is the list include Vivek Bhandari and Arjun Singh who are in the 25th and 26th spot respectively. Bhandari has earned a total of $12,340.91 which includes the $800 he earned at Macau where he finished 53rd. Arjun Singh, who finished 18th at Macau to earn $2,416, has a total earnings of $11,846.50.

World Day meet

NEW DELHI: The Amateur Athletic Federation of India (AAFI) will be organising the third edition ofthe World Athletics Day Meet on May 9 and 10 at Patiala. Junior athletes under 20 years as on December 31 this year will be eligible to participate in the tournament.

The following events will be held during the competition: Men: 100m, 400m, 1500m, 110m hurdles, high jump, javelin, shot put and 5 km walk; Women: 100m, 400m, 1500m, 100m hurdles, long jump, discus, shot put and 3 km walk.
