Assam strife claims three more lives

GUWAHATI, MAY 5: Two Bodos and a Santhal were killed, 93 houses set ablaze and a convoy of a senior police officer was attacked in continuing ethnic violence in Assam's trouble-torn Kokrajhar district today.

Members of rival tribal communities set afire 93 houses -- 82 belonging to Bodos and 11 to Santhals -- at Bangaldoba village, officials said.

Bodies of two Bodos were recovered from the gutted houses, they said, adding a Santhal was shot dead at Saraikhuli village.

Additional police pickets were set up and patrolling was intensified in strife-hit areas. Senior district and police officials were supervising relief operations.

Militants of outlawed National Democratic Front of Bodoland attacked the convoy of Kokrajhar SP L R Bishnoi at Naikagaon, injuring his bodyguard.Two youths today forced their way into a female ward of Kokrajhar civil hospital and attacked a woman, wounded in Sunday's Bodo militant attack, with hammers.

Meanwhile, the Front in a statement today denied its involvement in thekilling of 14 Santhal bus passengers last Sunday.
