19 let off in hawala case

NEW DELHI: Union Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha and Union Minister for Tourism and Parliamentary Affairs Madan Lal Khurana are among 19 politicians today discharged by the Delhi High Court in the Rs 65 crore Jain Hawala case. The court would, however, examine the charges against former Speaker Balram Jakhar and Janata Dal President Sharad Yadav.

Gill's fate in limbo

NEW DELHI: The Prasar Bharati ordinance lapses tomorrow but it is still not clear if the controversial Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Prasar Bharati Board, S S Gill, will continue in office. The ordinance, which was promulgated for the second time last November, could not be ratified in Parliament. There will be a question mark on Gill's continuing in office after tomorrow on the grounds of his being overage as at 71 he is well beyond the age limit set in the act for the CEO.

Metro status

NEW DELHI: The Union Cabinet today decided to grant A 1 status to fourmetropolitan cities to help the Central Government employees get higher House Rent Allowance (HRA). The cities are Calcutta, Mumbai, Delhi and Chennai.
