VADODARA, May 5: The Vadodara District Higher Secondary Teachers Association has demanded the state government to take adequate steps to fill up the 353-odd vacant posts of higher secondary teachers in the district.Association president Jayanti Patel said, ``The state government should lift the ban on recruitment of new teachers and expect the school authorities to compromise with the surplus teachers.''
There were about 3,000 surplus teachers in the state. As per the directive of the state government, schools could not recruit new teachers till all the surplus teachers were absorbed.
Patel said the surplus teachers did not always cater to the expectations of the principals. Hence vacancies remained in the schools even after utilising the services of surplus teachers. He added that most of the teachers were also on the verge of retiring and appointing these teachers would mean frequent appointments later.
Patel added that if the state government thought that the surplus teachers were being paid unnecessarily then the schools could not bear the brunt of it.
Patel said many schools also violated the norms of having eight square foot per child. And each class was not supposed to have more than 55 students.
He alleged that most of the classes were packed with students and the concerned authorities were not taking any action against these school authorities. Patel added that if the authorities did not take action against these schools then the members would agitate and boycott classes from the beginning of the next academic year.
