Corporators support call for code of conduct

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
PUNE, May 5: A group of corporators at the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), led by former mayors Ankush Kakde and Shantilal Suratwala, have supported the PMC Officers' Association's demand to frame a ``code of conduct'' for political workers and visitors to the corporation.

In a statement issued to the press, Suratwala and Kakde have said that barring few, a majority of the demands made by the association where just and should be accepted by Mayor Vatsala Andekar.

The Congress leaders also charged that the Mayor had not invited them for the joint meeting of officers and the elected members held at the Balgandharva Rangmandir yesterday. The meeting had remained inconclusive and the Mayor had announced she would call a joint meeting of the leaders of all political parties at the PMC to work out a solution over the vexed issue.

Meanwhile, the association today stuck to its stand to boycott the civic meetings. All the senior civic officers remained absent at the standing committee meeting held this afternoon.

``There is no harm in issuing passes to the visitors. The demand that the political workers should not call on the officers in groups is also justified. The demand that the corporators and the citizens should call on the officers only during specified time can also be considered,'' Suratwala and Kakde said.

However, they made it clear that they were against the demand by the officer that only one general body meeting should be held during a month. According to state government guidelines it was mandatory that the civic general body should meet at least five times in a month, they said. Also, the stand taken by the officers that they would not be available for the general body meetings after the office hours is unjust, they felt.

The statement has also been signed by Nilesh Nikam, Vilas Wadekar, Usha Jagtap, Shiva Mantri, Ajit Apte and Manohar Nande.
