Attitude is everything

Sonali Brahma
Attitude is everything - shouts a hoarding of a popular cigarette brand. And across my mind flash a thousand images of people spitting on roads, littering streets, dumping in water, vehicles spouting toxic fumes and innumerable other surefire instances leading to rampant pollution.

``Everyday problems,'' you say, and yet they go on day after day, without being treated seriously. Why? Because we have become habituated to living in such abject unhygienic conditions. Not only are we polluting our environment, but in the process, even our minds are very much afflicted with this disease called pollution. This utter neglect of personal and environmental hygiene speaks of a completely apathetic attitude towards cleanliness. It is we who are responsible for this mess, and yet point fingers at others, holding them responsible for the pathetic state of environment due to pollution and degradation.

But, we can put a stop to this. Resist the temptation of throwing that chocolate-wrapper on the street. Change your mode of thinking. Your attitude. Once you decide to put a stop to your polluting habits, it's a battle half-won.

If we follow some simple rules, we can come clean of our bad `polluting' habits.

1. Don't turn a blind eye to dirt on roads and don't litter roads.
2. Don't let ear-shattering music fall on deaf ears.
3. Don't stop the toxic fumes from reaching your nose. Stop their emission from your vehicle.
4. Walk on footpaths. Roads are for vehicles.
5. Don't throw garbage near the garbage bin, throw it in.
6. Don't (Oops!) Do change your attitude!
