India crash to Iraq in opener
Iraq, pacing themselves adeptly to beat the heat, pounded India 5-1 in the opener of the Rajiv Gandhi International (under-21) Football Tournament at the Nehru Stadium, Fatorda. The hosts found Iraq too hot to handle after taking an early lead with a splendid strike by the profusely talented Alvito D'Cunha in the seventh minute.

Higgins becomes snooker's No 1
Scotsman John Higgins claimed snooker's top prize beating defending champion Ken Doherty 18-12 in the final of the Embassy World Championship at a packed crucible theatre. Higgins had led 10-6 overnight but, when play resumed yesterday, a battling Doherty clawed his way back, first to 10-12 and then 11-13 in the best of 35-frame match.

Alec Stewart to lead England in Tests
Alec Stewart was named as England's cricket Test captain, beating out Nasser Hussain for one of the most high-pressured jobs in British sport. Stewart, 35, will captain the side for this summer's five-Test series against South Africa and the single Test against Sri Lanka in August.

Saravanan takes lead as Barua is shocked
V Saravanan of Petroleum Sports Control Board emerged as the sole leader with seven points to his credit at the end of the tenth round of the 35th National A Chess Championship. The two top seeds, Grandmasters Dibyendu Barua (West Bengal) and Pravin Thipsay (Banks Sports Board) are sharing the second spot with 6.5 points each. Another half point behind them are International Masters K Murugan (Neyveli Lignite Corporation) and Abhijit Kunte (Petroleum Sports Control Board).
