Tendulkar, Kumble among rested seniors

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, MAY 8: Sachin Tendulkar and six others who returned triumphant from the desert kingdom of Sharjah last month have been rested for the Coca-Cola triangular series involving hosts India, Kenya and Bangladesh. The 14-member squad announced by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jayant Lele for the first two games, here this afternoon, features two rookies -- Andhra wicket-keeper MSK Prasad and dashing Bengal opener Nikhil Haldipur.

Making a comeback into the team are Rahul Dravid, all-rounder Robin Singh, leggie Sairaj Bahutule, medium-pacer Debashish Mohanty and opener Gagan Khoda.

While explaining the changes, selection committee chairman Kishen Rungta said: ``the basic idea was not to field a weak team and also not make the selection look like an all-India camp. It is in this context we are trying out the fringe players. Besides, we have decided to give all the senior players two games.''

Reiterating that nobody was being replaced, Rungta said: ``everyone is being triedout.'' He made it amply clear that Harbhajan Singh and Venkatesh Prasad would play the latter phase of the tournament.

Commenting on the fitness of some of the key players Javagal Srinath, Robin Singh and Ajit Agarkar, Rungta informed that Srinath had opted out of the event while Robin had produced a fitness certificate. Robin had injured his hand at a practice session during the Pepsi Cup triangular series held last month.

``The injury sustained to Agarkar at Sharjah was also discussed and it was found that there were no problems,'' he added.

With skipper Mohammad Azharuddin scheduled to attend the international Test captains meet at London from May 18, his deputy Ajay Jadeja may end up leading the side for the second game. ``The replacement for Azhar would be decided once he returns from Hong Kong, where he has gone to attend some personal work,'' disclosed Rungta.

When quizzed about the non-inclusion of Uttar Pradesh youngsters, all-rounder Mohammad Saif and Mohammad Kaif, Rungta replied: ``Afterjudging their performances we felt that they were too young for an India cap. They will be considered for the India A tour of Holland scheduled in July.''

The team for the latter part of the series would be announced at Bangalore on May 20, where India play their second match, informed Lele.

In a fine gesture, all the five selectors Rungta, Ajit Wadekar, Sambaran Bannerjee and Shivlal Yadav decided to donate Rs 50,000 to the family of former chairman of the committee Ramakant Desai, who died last month.
