N-E states will get Rs 1500 crore each year
Apart from the creation of a special non-lapsable fund of around Rs 1,500 crore each year, Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee yesterday announced a series of other measures as part of his special North-East package. For one, Sikkim is to be introduced as the eighth full-fledged member of the North East Council, and borders are to be opened up for travel and trade with neighbouring countries.

China protests again, US calls Fernandes
Incensed by repeated anti-China statements from Defence Minister George Fernandes, China has officially protested to India for a second time in less than a month. The Chinese Foreign Ministry summoned a senior Indian diplomat this week and handed a protest note, raising serious concern over the "ridiculous and fragile" statements by Fernandes.

US blasts Pak blasphemy laws
The United States has condemned the imposition of death sentence on a Christian in Pakistan and demanded repeal of the country's blasphemy law. It has also expressed regret over the suicide of Bishop John Joseph, 67, who reportedly shot himself outside a court in Punjab province in protest at the sentence of fellow Catholic Ayub Masih last month for defaming Islam.

Legislative Council polls: Naik's men keep Sena's doubts alive
Barring a twinge of uncertainty over the reaction of Sena chieftain Ganesh Naik's supporters to his dismissal, polling in all municipal councils, corporations, Zilla Parishads and Panchayat Samitis went off peacefully in the Legislative Council polls held at Thane yesterday.
