  Unearthing Big Bang II: Indian scientist's astronomical feat
The Kolhapuri village of Kurundwad in interior Maharashtra is a long, long way from galaxy GRB 971214 somewhere out there in the universe. But Dr Shrinivas Kulkarni has traversed the distance with great distinction. The Indian astrophysicist from Caltech and an IIT Delhi alumni threw the astronomical world into a tizzy by detecting and measuring what is being acknowledged as the biggest cosmic explosion since the Big Bang which created the universe.
  China protests again, US calls Fernandes
Incensed by repeated anti-China statements from Defence Minister George Fernandes, China has officially protested to India for a second time in less than a month. The Chinese Foreign Ministry summoned a senior Indian diplomat this week and handed a protest note, raising serious concern over the "ridiculous and fragile" statements by Fernandes.

US blasts Pak blasphemy laws
The United States has condemned the imposition of death sentence on a Christian in Pakistan and demanded repeal of the country's blasphemy law. It has also expressed regret over the suicide of Bishop John Joseph, 67, who reportedly shot himself outside a court in Punjab province in protest at the sentence of fellow Catholic Ayub Masih last month for defaming Islam.
Israel rejects US peace formula
Israel has again rejected a United States-backed compromise for breaking a 14-month-old peace deadlock with the Palestinians. "The very proposals being spoken of are not acceptable to the Government of Israel for the very reason that it doesn't fall in line with the security needs of the State of Israel," Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's senior adviser Danny Navehg said.

The bitter battle for Britain's Rolls-Royce Motor Cars looked set for fresh twists as the new favourite Volkswagen AG conceded on Friday that German rival BMW AG may raise its offer and Rolls parent Vickers Plc said it was open to higher bids.
Pepsico slaps anti-trust suit against Coke
Pepsico Inc has sued Coca-Cola Co alleging that it is holding a monopoly over the fountain-dispensed soft drink market by forbidding independent food service distributors from carrying Pepsi products. The suit, filed in Manhattan federal court, alleges that Coca-Cola has used this practice to maintain its more than 90% share of the fountain-dispensed soft drink market.
