  Battle for Pravda
As part of an ongoing court battle to claim the ownership of the legendary Communist mouthpiece, Pravda, one among its three successors celebrated the 86th anniversary of the newspaper this week. It did not seem to matter that the newspaper in its new avatar had not yet even made it to its first anniversary.
  Streisand vs Heston
In the wake of a wave of senseless shootings of school children, US anti-gun campaigners have a new spokeswoman: a mild-mannered nurse-turned-crusading Congresswoman who is now showcased in a television drama. The Long Island Incident, produced by Barbra Streisand and broadcast nationally on Sunday, has given Democratic Representative Carolyn McCarthy's story wide prominence -- and sparked high-stakes sparring between gun control advocates and the politically potent National Rifle Association (NRA).

Climate Of Intolerance
Dyaneshwar Nadkarni, a well-known Mumbai art critic, publishes a book on Husain which includes a drawing of the goddess Saraswati. It is not a "nude" in the sense of being realistic or sensuous but a stylised line drawing done 20 years ago. In the mid-'70s when the whole ethos of the nation was much less communal, Husain could hardly have imagined he was hurting anybody.
Failure of good intentions
For a government, just good intentions are not good enough. If you can't translate them into something tangible, you have failed. Nobody told this to Manohar Joshi, it seems. Two of the state government's most ambitious moves - one to regulate admissions to pre-primary centres and the other to ensure free treatment to people suffering from heart, kidney and brain disorders through Jeevandayi Scheme - have flopped.

Tricky tricky bang bang
Two underworld men shot in an encounter. How often have you seen a headline like that? Every day probably. Ever since the phenomenon came about in the mid-'80s, the word `encounter' has become part of the Mumbaikar's vocabulary, recognisable shorthand for cop killing with or without mitigating circumstances.
