High stakes involved in State by-polls
Flush with its Lok Sabha victory though the Congress may be, party leaders are worried about their prospects in the coming byelections to the Maharashtra Assembly. Of the ten seats, eight belong to the Congress, one to a Congress rebel now with the Shiv Sena and one to the Bharatiya Janata Party. The Congress' tussle with the Sena-BJP alliance for these seats will play a crucial role in elections to the Rajya Sabha in July.
BJP, allies to assemble with an eye on stability
The first meeting of the BJP-led government's coordination committee is primarily aimed at creating an image of unity and stability; to correct the impression that allies in the 17-party coalition are at odds with one another. "It is a forum to discuss issues amicably rather than going to the press," explained a senior BJP office-bearer.

JD-Cong drubs Lok Shakti in Council poll
An undeclared tie-up between the ruling Janata Dal and Opposition Congress during yesterday's biennial elections to fill up seven seats in the Legislative Council elections from the state assembly in Karnataka to give a drubbing to the BJP-backed Lok Shakti candidate paid off the desired results. The Janata Dal won four, Congress two and BJP one seat.
