  Anand starts in style at Madrid
Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand of India started his campaign on the Spanish soil in style beating British GM Michael Adams in the 7th Torneo Magistral Madrid Open here on Monday. The current World number two Anand, played classical game for the first time in more than a year, and superbly outplayed the British Grandmaster in the opening round.
  Klinsmann is and will remain captain: Vogts
Juergen Klinsmann will retain the captain's armband at the World Cup finals, German coach Berti Vogts said on Monday after recalling veteran Lothar Matthaeus into his squad. The 37-year-old Matthaeus, who earned the last of his record 122 caps in December 1994, will play in his fifth World Cup finals after 1982, 1986, 1990 and 1994.

Tamarina hands a bitter pill to Capriati
Jennifer Capriati's comeback suffered a worrying setback when she was overwhelmed in little more than an hour in the first round of the German Open yesterday by Tamarina Tanasugarn, the world number 32 from Thailand. Capriati seemed increasingly unable to concentrate properly during a disappointing 6-3 6-1 defeat.
Birthday boy Bakre takes lead
Asian sub-junior champion and sixth seed Tejas Bakre received a precious birthday present from third seed Mas Hafizulhilmi of Malaysia (Elo 2375) in the fourth round of the Asian Junior boys Chess Championship today. Bakre, who turned 17 scored a fine 32-move win over the third seed to take the lead in the under-20 section with 3.5 points.

Nirupama Vaidhyanathan came through three qualifying rounds to enter the main draw of the $75,000 Oporto challenger in Portugal. She now meets Sandra Cecchini, ranked No 158, in the first round.
French taxmen hope to have Carlos Valderrama in the net
French tax authorities have got Carlos Valderrama just where they want him. If the Colombian captain wants to play soccer in next month's World Cup, he's got a bill to settle first. The president of the Colombian soccer federation, Alvaro Fina, said on Monday that Valderrama would not be fielded unless he settles with the French, whom he owes $110,000 in unpaid taxes for 1988-91 when he played with the Montpelier Club.
