Buddha might be smiling, but not his disciples

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
CALCUTTA, May 16: With five nuclear tests under the belt, the Buddha might have smiled for the Bharatiya Janata Party Government and nuclear scientists. But the Buddhists in Bengal are certainly not amused.

The use of the name of "an apostle of peace" to denote nuclear tests has upset the members of the Bengal Buddhist Association. While they have no wish to get involved in any political controversy, they are unhappy about the association of "the Lord's name with destruction".

Dharmapal Mahathera, secretary of the association, said that his group did not want Buddhists to be involved in any controversy regarding the political correctness of nuclear tests. He added that he would hold discussions with his colleagues regarding the issue and then take a decision. Meanwhile, Calcutta today witnessed both celebrations and protests over the nuclear tests.
