Only Mumbai teams for Elf-Vengsarkar Cup

Mumbai, May 16: The third edition of the Elf-Vengsarkar Cup that gets under way at the Elf-Vengsarkar Academy ground, Oval maidan tomorrow would feature only Mumbai teams. The under-14 overs-limited cricket tournament would be a round-robin event comprising six teams drawn from various clubs of the city.

The teams named after past cricketing heroes of the city are: Polly Umrigar, Bapu Nadkarni, Ajit Wadekar, Dilip Sardesai, Ramakant Desai and Padmakar Shivalkar.

A selection trial for the boys from various clubs in the city was held before they were grouped into separate teams, informed Makarand Waingankar, the Elf-Vengsarkar Cricket Academy (EVCA) co-ordinator last night. Former Test star Dilip Vengsarkar pointed out that EVCA were one of the firsts to hold an under-14 event in the city resulting in a spate of u-14 tourneys over the years.

Last year, Sambaran Banerjee Academy, Calcutta, had won the Cup. However, this year, EVCA decided to invite only local teams for the tournament.

In addition to therolling trophy for the winning team, prizes for individual excellence are also at stake during the week-long tournament. Besides, awards for best player of the tourney (full cricket kit and trophy), best batsman (kit bag, bat and trophy) best bowler (kit bag, shoes and trophy) and best fielder (trophy and kit bag) there would be a Man of the Match award (trophy and kit bag) for every encounter.

THE TEAMS -- Ajit Wadekar XI: Pardosh Mayekar (captain and wicket-keeper), Hiken Shah, Parag Maidikar, Sushant Vaze, Ankul Shilotri, Nilesh Gunjal, Philip Verghese, Hrishikesh Patkar, Sajeet Shetty, Deepak Nivalkar, Karan Kadam, Prashant Kadam, Sahid Shaikh, Prasanna Sant and Ronak Shah.

Ramakant Desai XI: Swapnoj Thakur (captain), Rohan Bagwe, Mandar Matkar, Akshay Hodar, Aditya Mehta, Aditya Amin, Parag Khanapurkar, Sameer Karve (WK), Markesh Bhatt, Rajiv Pawar, Tushar Rane, Sharnak Gupta, Siddir Vast, Pushkar Kalyankar and Omkar Sawant.

Bapu Nadkarni XI: Jigar Shah (capt), Neil Savant,Bravish Shetty, Devdutt Joshi, Motruja Bhopalwala, Sagar Danait, Varun Kansara, Vikrant Gupta, Swapnil Patil (WK), Kunal Waingankar, Prathmesh Sawant, Vaibhav Shah, Akshay Gurap, Devendra Mansur, Kinjal Patel.

Padmakar Shivalkar XI: Sushant Marathe (captain-wicketkeeper), Devraj Raut, Sahil Rane, Mayur Sawant, Rohish Kovalkar, Sunny Rathod, Abhijit Deshpande, Siddarth Sharma, Santosh Nishant, Kiran Mayekar, Aditya Koli, Amulya Kamerkar, Sunil Vaghela, Mishal Mehta and Larson D'Costa.
