Mumbai, May 16: Hosts PM Hindu Bath won the All-India Invitation water polo tournament defeating Indian Navy 13-6 in the final at PM Hindu Bath here today.Earlier, Deccan Gymkhana, Pune got past Bengal A 10-4 in the Hardliners Cup.Rajiv Thakkar, Rajesh Maghani and Vivek Merchant produced a series of attacks to unsettle the Navy citadel.
Thakkar, who was later declared the Man-of-the-Tournament, drew first blood in the fourth minute. A minute later, showing good anticipation, Merchant scored off the rebound. But Navy came back strongly as SD Kumar scored with a long ranger. At the end of first quarter, PM were leading 2-1.
They extended their domination into the second quarter scoring at regular intervals. Parag Vora, hero of semi-finals was not in the same form as yesterday, added another off a penalty and Thakkar put his team ahead 4-1 with a fine reflex goal.
Parag was later adjudged the best forward award while Manghani was declared the best defender.
With Ajit Singh Sobhawat and Thakkar landinga goal each within three minutes, PM raced ahead to a 6-2 lead at the end of first-half.
Such was PM's dominance that they didn't concede a goal in the third quarter. However, the Navymen bounced back in the last quarter resulting a splurge of goals. But PM's early lead was enough to see them through.
For the hosts, international 'keeper Nirav Vora, was named the best goalkeeper, came up with some brilliant saves but the hero of the day was Vivek Merchant, who was the central figure in scheming the raids.
Hiren Rajda was adjudged the best promising player.
For the triumphant coach Kishan Singh everything went according to plan. ``We played to a plan and it worked. We have the best of players but it was a good contest and certainly a good boost for the young players as they played against best of the country.''
In the Hardliners Cup, Sanjay Karandikar pumped in five goals as Deccan Gymkhana, Pune trounced Bengal A.
For the winners, Kedar Dixit, Sahilesh Bangale and Kunal Vankurde scored a braceeach while Inderjeet Khadilakr netted one.
The Bengal captain Tarak Nath Shaw got a brace while Sandeep Dutta and Joydeep Mukherjee found one each.
