KOHIMA, May 16: Several Naga organisations would launch a joint indefinite "economic blockade" on neighbouring Manipur from May 23 and the NSCN (I-M) has warned an "ethnic flare-up" against that government's move to carve out a new district for Kukis.United Naga Council (UNC), All Naga Students Association of Manipur, Naga People's Movement for Human Rights, Naga Women's Union of Manipur and Naga tribals have decided to clamp the blockade till their demands were not considered by the Manipur government.
These organisations have been vehemently opposing bifurcation of Manipur's Senapati district for creation of a Sadar Hills (Kangpokpi) district for the Kukis, asserting that the demand for a separate Kukiland in Manipur was at the root of the recent Kuki-Naga ethnic strife. A release issued by UNC president KS Paul Leo and general secretary Ashinpou Gangmei, here yesterday said the decision was taken after Manipur Chief Minister W Nipamacha Singh "failed" to assure a delegation of these organisations onMay 14 that he would not go ahead with the government decision.
Meanwhile, NSCN (I-M) in a separate statement said creation of the new district out of land belonging to the Nagas might invite communal flare-up and the Manipur Chief Minister would be solely responsible for such ethnic trouble.
"The Nagas are not against the creation of such a district provided it is not carved out of their land," the NSCN publicity in-charge said and warned that "attempts to use force to create the district will be defended by the Nagas". The Naga organisations delegation urged the Manipur Chief Minister to take into consideration the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between All Naga Students Association of Manipur (ANSAM), Naga Students Federation (NSF) and UNC and the Manipur Government in 1981.
