MUMBAI, May 17: Left-handed opener Hiken Shah held centre-stage on the opening day of the Elf-Vengsarkar overs-limited under-14 cricket tournament at the Elf-Vengsarkar academy ground, Oval Maidan here today. The young lad slammed 109 (92b, 105m, 17x4) to guide Ajit Wadekar XI to an emphatic 88-run victory over Dilip Sardesai XI.Earlier in a low scoring game, Polly Umrigar XI trounced Bapu Nadkarni XI by eight wickets.
Put into bat, Wadekar XI were propped up by a 124-run third wicket stand between Shah and Sushant Vaze (31). They were also aided by the rival bowlers who bowled 30 wides.
An all-round display on the field by the Wadekar XI lads, who effected three run-outs, restricted Sardesai to 138 in the allotted 35 overs.
Wicket-keeper batsman Rohan Sadrjoshi, who remained unbeaten on 51 (48b, 58m, 10x4) and his 50-run association for the fourth wicket with Dishant Daftari (31) were the only highlights of Sardesai XI innings.
Earlier electing to bat, Nadkarni XI were skittled out for 94. Infact, it were the opposition who were the major contributors giving away 25 wides.
Umrigar XI rattled up the required runs in the 21st over with Rohan Saldanha (26 not out) claiming the Man of the Match award for his all-round performance. Saldanha and Girish Vaswani (17 not out) overcame the initial loss of two wickets to string an unbroken 55-run third wicket partnership to see the side through.

Merchant in semis
Yasin Merchant and Siddarth Anand entered the billiards semi-finals in contrasting styles in the Garware Club House Open billiards and snookerchampionships here today.
Anand, with a break of 63, defeated unseeded Omar Balsara 894-754, while former national champion Merchant pipped unseeded Dhruv Sitwalla of Mumbai 779-778 in the quarter-finals.
Merchant had breaks of 58, 56 and 53, while 21-year-old Anand had breaks of 60 and 61.
Top seed Siddharth Rao of Tamil Nadu and fifth seeded Kamal Tulshan of Mumbai made it to the snooker semi-finals. Tulshan, the third seed in the billiards, has also made it to the billiards semi-finals along with top seeded Rupesh Shah of Gujarat.
