Coimbatore blast: CBI probe sought

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
CHENNAI, May 17: BJP general secretary M Venkaiah Naidu on Sunday demanded a CBI probe into the Coimbatore bomb blasts after State police investigation revealed a conspiracy to eliminate BJP leader L K Advani. ``Chief Minister M Karunanidhi should not stand on false prestige and must come forward to hand over the probe to the CBI,'' he told the press in Chennai.

On the AIADMK demand for the ouster of the DMK government, the BJP leader remarked, ``State governments will be dismissed only if there is a Constitutional break-down, and not for law and order problems.''He parried queries about whether the present situation in Tamil Nadu could be termed as a case of Constitutional break-down with a cryptic remark: ``If there is a Constitutional break-down, the next moment the government will be out.''

He went on to state that the DMK government should order a CBI probe ``in the interest of his own government''. The CM had declared in the assembly that Advani was the target. The issue had acquired inter-stateramifications following arrests of accused in various states including Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, a CBI probe should be ordered, he added.

Naidu rejected the CM's claim that effective precautionary measures taken by the government had kept at bay the human bomb aimed at Advani in Coimbatore on Feb 14. Naidu asserted that a change in Advani's tour schedule alone had saved the BJP leader. ``A CBI probe is necessary to get to the root of the conspiracy and expose the real face of the conspirators,'' he added.

The incident should not be seen from a political angle but as a national security issue, he said. He appealed to political parties not to ``pamper organisations like Al Umma which were behind the blasts''.

Asked if the Centre would initiate drastic action if the DMK government failed to order a CBI probe, Naidu said the Union Government had no powers to force any State Government to launch a CBI investigation into any incident. No mid-term poll: Naidu categorically denied the Congresscharge that the BJP regime was contemplating a mid-term poll with a view to capitalise on the nuclear tests. ``Let the Congress be assured that the BJP government will last its full term and polls will be held only five years later,'' he said. ``We will give the Congress enough time to prepare for the polls,'' he added.

Lashing out at the Left for `politicising' the nuclear test issue, he said the Communists' hidden agenda was to bring Congress back to power. He said the tests were conducted only for self-defence. India was aware that peace was possible only through `strength'. Coming down heavily on criticism by US, France, China, and Pakistan, he said the international community should realise the compulsions and rationale behind India's nuclear programme. ``We have neighbours who have acquired nuclear weapons and are trying to weaken India,'' he observed. He went on to ask if US and China had not contributed to the arms race. Naidu said, 50 per cent of the 2000-odd nuclear tests done so far in the worldwere conducted by America.
