Blast an "Islamic" bid to kill Advani: Singhal

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
BHUBANESWAR, May 17: President of Vishwa Hindu Parishad Ashok Singhal today demanded dismissal of State Governments having poor track records in maintaining law and order.

Singhal, who was here on a membership drive, told newsmen that the Karunanidhi government had prior information about the Coimbatore bomb blasts which was an attempt to kill Union Home Minister L K Advani. This was admitted by Karunanidhi in the State Assembly, he said.

Describing the blasts as an `Islamic attempt' to assassinate Advani, the VHP chief accused the Tamil Nadu government of encouraging Islamic fundamentalists. Asked whether VHP supported AIADMK chief J Jayalalitha on the dismissal of Karunanidhi government, Singhal said VHP was not a political party.

Referring to the so-called Liberation movement in J&K and some North-Eastern states, Singhal said it was a challenge to the sovereignty and unity of the country. He alleged that the divisive forces were getting active support from CIA of the United States and ISI ofPakistan. Christian and Islamic fundamentalist forces have joined hands to de-stabilise the country, he alleged. Such activities should be dealt with severely. However, some State Governments had failed miserably to contain these fundamentalist forces while others were extending support to them, he said, with an obvious reference to Tamil Nadu government.

Singhal said the Christian missionaries were trying to exploit poor, illiterate tribals and harijans by converting them. He urged the Centre to keep a close watch on the international funding agency financing these missionaries and non-governmental organisations operating in the country. The government should monitor themissionaries activities, he said.
