Courts too lenient with criminals: Munde
EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, May 17: Deputy Chief Minister Gopinath Munde has criticised the criminal justice system for being too lenient towards criminals, which led to incidents like the recent shootout at JJ Hospital and the consequent escape of Feroze Konkani.Speaking at Nashik, Munde said the courts are much too liberal, which nullifies the police efforts to crack down on the underworld. Konkani could have been directed to Thane Medical College Hospital for treatment instead of being brought to Bhendi Bazar, the underworld's bastion, Munde pointed out. He said the courts permitted medical examination and treatment of criminals in distant hospitals even though they could be attended to in prison or at a local hospital. Only during emergencies and in case of serious ailments should criminals be allowed to be transported to Mumbai or any distant hospital, he added. The courts also permit undertrials to have meals brought from outside prison, which is used as a conduit to pass messages and establish links with accomplicesoutside, he said. This thwarts the government's endeavour to take strict action against organised criminals, he said, adding it is time the system stopped sympathising with them.
