BHOPAL, May 17: The ruling Congress and the opposition BJP in Madhya Pradesh are at present striving to take credit for the assurance of formation of a separate state of Chhattisgarh, though both are sceptical of its early formation. The promise for the formation of a separate Chhattisgarh state was made in the national agenda of the BJP-led coalition government at the Centre and the presidential address to both the houses of Parliament.
Apart from Chhattisgarh, the other two small states that are proposed to be set up by the BJP-led government are Uttarakhand and Vanachal. The Congress had in its manifesto for the November 1993 assembly elections promised the people of Madhya Pradesh that it would work for carving out the separate state of Chhattisgarh.
The BJP, which has never been known to be a strong votary of Chhattisgarh, has, however, welcomed the move to create this separate state and it was because of this that the state assembly during its recent budget session unanimously passed a resolutionthanking the Centre for its move to set up the separate Chhattisgarh state.
Leaders of both the parties are however sceptical about its early formation considering the fact that no legal step has been taken till now to bring it into being.
Leaders of both parties say that mere mention of the formation of the separate state of Chhattisgarh in the BJP-led coalition's national agenda does not mean that any concrete decision has been taken about it.
