Chanda's brilliance betters all

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, May 17: Sandipan Chanda, 15, needing a draw scored a brilliant victory over K Vishweshwaran to emerge triumphant in the International Rating Open Chess Tournament at the Andheri Sports Complex. Chanda finished with nine points and the clear winner.

The other two contenders for the title, TS Ravi of Indian Oil and P Mitrakanth settled for a 14-move draw. Vishweshwaran seemed to have a good position after Chanda played the Sicilian Scheviniengen variation. But the man from Tamil Nadu traded his rook and a pawn for Chanda's queen. That seemed to tilt the scales in favour of Chanda who squeezed out the fight from Vishweshwaran by constantly pressuring the queen. In the end game, Chanda had a rook, two bishops and a knight for Vishweshwaran's queen, a bishop and knight. He resigned after 40 moves.

It was the first title for the ninth standard student of Better School, Calcutta. He had won the national titles in the under-10 category in 1993 at Pallakad, Kerala and the under-14 crown in 97 in TamilNadu. He was richer by Rs 21,000.

Another youngster impressing with her performance was Swati Ghate. She scored 7.5 points and today held International Master Sharad Tilak to a draw. This comes close on the heels of her two victories in the last two rounds. Swati won the women's prize of Rs 3,000.

Soundarajan Kidambi, who also finished with 7.5 points like Ghate, takes home the best junior prize and with it Rs 3,000.
