CHANDIGARH, May 17: Over 500 needy and deserving students were given aid packets containing books, stationery, uniform, fee and other things by the local twin branches of Bharat Vikas Parishad, here today. The students who got the aid at the Sahyog-1998 programme, held at the Guru Gobind Singh Bhawan, were drawn from 15 government schools across the city.Chief photographer of The Tribune, Karam Singh was also honoured for his contribution in the field of photo-journalism.
The general secretary of BVP, Avinash Kamal Jain, revealed that the timely aid by the parishad to a Kashmiri migrant girl had helped her seek admission in MBA course. Several other students had got selected to engineering and medical colleges, he pointed out.
Punjab Food and Civil Supplies Minister Madan Mohan Mittal, who was the chief guest, appreciated the efforts of the organisations like the parishad, as he said the governments can not reach the micro level.
UT Deputy Commissioner K.K. Khandelwal stressed the need to create awareness among the youngsters about the national song, national anthem and the national feelings.
A member of the parishad said that the scheme to give aid to students was an annual exercise and the members visit the schools and meet the parents before finally choosing the students.
