Anand held
Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand traded material at regular intervals but failed to gain initiative against a passive Spanish GM Pablo San Segundo for a draw to maintain sole lead after five rounds in the 7th Torneo Magistral Chess Open in Madrid on Saturday night.

Atwal joint second

Chanda wins
Sandipan Chanda, 15, needing a draw scored a brilliant victory over K Vishweshwaran to emerge triumphant in the International Rating Open Chess Tournament at the Andheri Sports Complex. Paes-Bhupathi win
Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi came through a tough three-setter against the Spanish pair of Luis Lobo and Javier Sanchez 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 (6) to enter the doubles final of the Super-9 Italian Open tennis championships at the Foro Italico. With this, they have won 22 of the 25 matches they played so far.

Lewis recalled
All-rounder Chris Lewis, out of favour with the England selectors since turning up late for a Test match two years ago, has been included in the 14-man squad for the one-day series against South Africa.

Indians get bronze
Pentala Harikrishna and Deepan Chakravarthy of India bagged a bronze medal each as the Asian Age Group Chess Championship concluded in Rasht (Iran) today. Harikrishna won the third place in the under-14 boys' section in a tie-break while Deepan emerged a clear third in the under-12 boys' category.
